Questions to ask your maternity photographer
Maternity photography honors mothers and pregnancies in a way that every pregnant woman deserves. If you’re planning a maternity photography session, first of all, congratulations on doing something kind and beautiful for yourself!
In this planning stage, you want to make sure you know what to expect and how to prepare. On top of the essential details like when and where, what else should you ask your maternity photographer? These are my suggestions.
What Should I Bring to My Maternity Photo Session?
Your photographer may give you a list of items to bring, but if not, make sure you know what to pack. This could include snacks and drinks for yourself, wardrobe items, makeup for touch-ups, and so on. That list will vary, though, based on what your photographer offers. For example, I have a fabulous client closet of stunning maternity gowns for you to use, so you don’t have to worry about planning or bringing your wardrobe.
Should I Do Anything to Look My Best for the Photo Shoot?
Maternity photography is all about capturing your authentic beauty in pregnancy, so don’t feel the need to slim down or make any significant changes – you’re gorgeous as you are! There are a few suggestions your photographer might recommend, though, like drinking plenty of water to give your skin a beautiful glow and planning ahead if you want any type of hair removal so that any razor burn or waxing redness is gone before the photo shoot. Make sure to also chat about whether your session includes professional hair and makeup or whether you should arrange for your own hair and makeup.
Can I Include My Spouse/Partner and Kids?
Every photographer manages their maternity shoots differently, so it’s important to ask about this if you aren’t sure. For example, I am honored to include poses with your partner and/or your other children at no additional cost because I want to make sure your session focuses on your wishes, whether you want your family involved or you want the session to be a special experience for you on your own. Some photographers may only allow for photos of you during your maternity session, or they may have an extra fee to include your family.
Here’s a bonus tip too: if you plan to include your family in the session, ask your photographer what they should wear so that their look suits the aesthetic of the photo shoot.
What Is the Process After My Maternity Photo Shoot?
It’s easy to get so focused on planning for the photo session that you forget about what happens afterward: the finished portraits. Every photographer does this a bit differently, so make sure you find out your photographer’s process. Will you receive an online gallery to choose your favorite images or will you go into the studio to see them in person? Does your photographer offer digital files only or will they also help you order the finished display pieces to enjoy in your home?
