Meet Allison Dittman of Allison Dittman Photography
Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Dittman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Allison. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When my first son was born my husband and I decided we wanted to have newborn pictures taken of him. These are pictures I love and I will cherish for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, the experience with that photographer was not as pleasant as I had expected. That day though, changed my life.

From that day, I started thinking about how families and newborns should be treated. The pictures are important, but so is the entire experience.

I knew that if I wanted to be a stay at home mom I was going to need to start a career that I could be passionate about, and still learn and grow on my own time. I already had a foundation of knowledge about photography from classes I took in high school and college, and I have always loved being around children. It seemed like the perfect fit to start newborn photography. I knew that if I wanted to be able to deliver the quality images that families would cherish I would need to take my skill set to another level. I took workshops offered by some of the most talented photographers in the newborn photography field. My top two favorite workshops where I learned the most were by Andrea Kinter, at Andrea Kinter Photography and Jennifer Lambson, at Photography by Jennifer Lambson. Workshops like these have given me the ability to specialize in newborn photography.

The journey to this point has been anything but easy, but has been the most rewarding thing that I have ever done. I have been blessed to work with families that are starting new chapters of their lives. I have been able to chronicle entire first years of my clients lives as they go from a newborn to walking. These are the days and the moments that go by too fast. I hope that my photographs capture the happiest time in their lives and will be looked back on with great memories. My goal is to provide not only the pictures that a family loves and cherishes, but also an experience that is stress free. Families should be treated with kindness and respect, and the children should be treated with patience and love.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey has not always been easy. Some of the struggles I expected, and some I did not. I knew that I would be up against a field filled with talented photographers and that I would have to push myself to learn and get better every day. I did not know the challenge of staying new and current though. Just like with any photography genre, newborn photography constantly changes with current trends and what is popular now. Outfits and props must be kept updated and quality items come at a very high price.

Like any mom trying to balance work, children, and life knows, this balancing act takes time to master; if we ever really can. Having young children while also being a small business owner has been a tough at times. I have learned over the years how to juggle these responsibilities as best I can, and I sympathize with all parents that have to learn to find that balance.

I think the biggest challenge I have had to face is moving my business to another state. I moved here about a year and a half ago from Colorado. Having to start my business over was something that I knew was going to be challenging. I was scared and nervous, yet excited for my new journey. So far it has been the best decision I have made for my business and I could not be happier.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Allison Dittman Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a photographer that specializes in custom, fine-art, newborn photography as well as personalized maternity and baby portraiture.

I am best known for my attention to detail in creating clean and timeless styles in capturing each and every precious milestone during the first year of life.

I would like to think every photographer offers something unique to their clients. In my case, I became a newborn photographer for various reasons, but, one of them was because I wanted to create a welcoming and warm environment for my clients in the precious days that followed the birth of their new baby. I have made sure to attend to every detail in my studio to ensure their comfort by providing snacks, cold drinks, a place for their other children to play and space for new and exhausted parents to relax. Then when everyone is comfortable I get to work creating beautiful memories of their new little one and of those tiny details that fade so fast.

Upon our first consultation every client is provided with a questionnaire to help me customize their session to make it as unique and special as their baby is. In addition, I like to surprise parents with special composite pictures of their little one by taking images of their baby from the session and merging them into a high quality digital backdrop to create a beautiful and unique custom art piece for them.

I pride myself on not only the quality of the finished products that I deliver to my clients, but also the entire experience I provide. From our initial consultation, to the final gallery reveal, and the delivery of specialty products, I guide the parents every step of the way. Each and every client is another opportunity for me to ensure that their family has these memories to last a lifetime and pass down through the years. I value the chance to be a part of my clients’ lives and memories and to capture their little ones growing.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
When it comes to being a small business owner, finding success is more times than not about hard work and determination. However, luck can sometimes sneak in there and give us that extra push we needed. I have been lucky to stumble across unexpected friendships in colleagues in my field where we can share ideas and encourage one another; and who doesn’t need a cheerleader sometimes? I believe people find their way into your life for a reason. Sometimes to learn a lesson and sometimes to find those people whom you can surround yourself with that won’t let you quit and encourage you to keep pushing ahead. I have been lucky enough to find those people and they help me keep improving my skills and to see no limit as to how far I can go. I am incredibly grateful for all of those people in my life; from friends and other photographers, to my family, and most of all my husband.
